The urge to check email

Is very strong on the weekends. I must say I have not yet mastered the art of leaving work in the classroom when I leave on Friday.

During the first semester I spend a lot of time on the weekends prepping and lesson planning for the week to come. This would end with a very early arrival at school on Monday morning so I could be the first to use the copy machine.

But this semester, I’ve been trying to prep fully for Monday by the time I leave on Friday. This way, I can take both Saturday and Sunday off.

I accomplished that on Friday. But still, my finger hovers over the school profile set up on Google Chrome, wondering whether my students have emailed me asking for help. And surely a 5-minute dip into Gmail won’t hurt?

But then 5 minutes becomes 10 minutes. And then I update PowerSchool with a few late assignments. And change the project details for my theology class. And watch a student’s video submission. And tinker with something in my lesson plans and re-upload. And start thinking about everything I need to buy at the store for the social science students this week.

Stop. Close the browser. Breathe. It’ll all be there tomorrow morning.
